The Dalles is the largest city of Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The site was a major Native American trading center. The name of the city comes from the French word dalle, meaning “sluice” referring to the columnar basalt rocks carved by the Columbia river. The Dalles was incorporated as a city in 1857 and now has a population of 16,010.
